Accessibility

Part of our audience reads this site on a phone, on bad signal, during an active fire. Access is a safety feature here, not a compliance checkbox.

Standard

This site is built to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Every template is tested with automated tooling and a manual keyboard pass before it ships.

What that means in practice

  • Every page works with JavaScript disabled, including navigation, filters, and forms.
  • A skip-to-content link is the first focusable element on every page.
  • Every interactive element has a visible focus ring; nothing removes the outline without replacing it.
  • Text contrast meets 4.5:1, and interactive borders meet 3:1.
  • Touch targets are at least 44×44 pixels.
  • Form errors are described in text and announced to screen readers, never signaled by color alone.
  • prefers-reduced-motion disables all transitions and transforms.
  • Pages hold up at 200% zoom with no horizontal scrolling and no clipped content.
  • We do not use CAPTCHA — it blocks exactly the people who most need to reach us.

Known limitations

  • Some primary-source documents we publish are agency scans that are not machine-readable. Where that is the case, we say so, and we will supply an accessible version on request.

Report a barrier

If something on this site blocks you, email putthefireout@nwasolution.org with the page address and what happened. We treat access barriers as bugs and respond within three business days. If you need a document in a different format, ask and we will produce one.
